Law Clerks

Laura has over 20 years of litigation experience as a law clerk. She has worked on many trials including large actions with voluminous documents in electronic format and several class actions. In addition to document management, Laura assists the Basman Smith LLP Civil Litigation Group with all aspects of litigation from assisting in the drafting of pleadings, managing undertakings, preparing mediation briefs and managing collection efforts after judgment including out of province enforcements. Laura is an associate member of the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO) and has volunteered her time on the board of directors and several committees.

Helen joined Basman Smith in August 1999. She has over thirty years of extensive experience as an Estate’s Law Clerk, having completed the Law Clerk programme at Humber College in 1974.

Helen expertly handles all aspects of estate administration work, and provides valuable assistance to the Corporate and Estates group through her work on various estate planning and corporate-commercial matters. Helen’s longstanding commitment to estates and trusts work has made her an invaluable resource for the firm.

Lihua Hu has over 13 years assisting on diverse matters related to Immigration law. Lihua received her bachelor degree from Beijing Languages and Culture University, China in 1982 and was a visiting scholar at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia from 1994 to 1995. Lihua is fluent in Mandarin.

She is proficient in the requirements of all applications and documentation for the successful resolution of immigration matters. Lihua also works closely with clients to gather necessary information, organizes client documentations, prepares forms and filings, and assists in drafting submission letters.

Carol has over 25 years experience in all aspects of corporate and commercial transactions, estate administration, estate planning and tax law. She provides invaluable assistance to the Basman Smith LLP Corporate and Estates Group.

Along with providing clerical support, Carol also assists in the preparation and filing of court documents and documentation for various Ministries. Carol is involved in the drafting of applications for Certification of Appointment of Estate Trustee (with or without a Will). She also participates in all components of the administration of estates and is proficient in the preparation of executor’s accounts.

As a corporate law clerk with over 10 years of experience, Olu has developed a particular expertise in the areas of corporate due diligence searches and minute book review and summary, and presently maintains over 650 corporate records for our clients. Olu has extensive knowledge of the Ontario and Canada Business Corporations Acts with respect to the incorporation and organization of companies, the preparation and filing of Annual Returns, Articles of Amendment, Amalgamations, Continuances, Dissolutions and Revivals, and extra-provincial and business name registrations.

In her role as law clerk she also has gained a tremendous amount of experience in transactional work, in particular in regard to corporate re-organizations, section 85(1) rollovers and share restructuring.

Olu prides herself in her attention to detail and her organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills.

Anne has over 25 years experience as a law clerk and, since 2001, her work primarily focuses in the area of family law supporting the Basman Smith LLP Family Law Group. Anne handles all aspects of family law files, and has extensive experience in trial preparation and cases involving complex financial issues.

Anne graduated from Woodsworth College at U of T in 1980, became a member of the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario in 1987, in 1993 received, with honours, her Certification as a senior litigation law clerk, from Centennial College. In 2012, Anne successfully completed and obtained her Fellowship Certification in Family Law from the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario.

Anne has participated yearly in programs offered by the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO) and Law Society seminars, relevant to family and civil/commercial litigation, and has presented at workshops directed to law clerks.
