Biography
Called to the bar in 1980
Admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1980, Doug Beamish practised in the areas of family law and estate litigation at a national law firm from his call to the bar until he joined Basman Smith as a partner in 2008. Doug obtained his Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Ottawa in 1978. Prior to that, he majored in economics and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1975. Doug is a litigation lawyer, specializing in matrimonial and estate litigation. He advises clients on all aspects of family law litigation, including equalization of net family properties of separating spouses, custody of and access to children, support, domestic contracts and matrimonial issues in corporate transactions. Doug's estate litigation expertise includes the validity and enforcement of wills and trusts, dependant's relief claims and variation of trust applications. Doug has attended as counsel in numerous court proceedings at the trial level and at the appellate levels of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, including the Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He has also responded successfully to an application for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. Doug is a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
